Merlot   Merlot
Merlot is a red wine grape. Historically, it has been used to blend and soften the tannins of red wines produced by other types of grapes. However, consumers are finding the soft tannins of Merlot so appealing that many wines today are produced using only Merlot grapes.

The Merlot grape is an early ripening grape that matures before the Cabernet Sauvignon grape in the growing season and that grows better in cooler, constant climates as compared to very hot, dry climates. The Merlot grape tends to have a comparatively thin skin which is why it produces wines that are less tannic and lighter. It is this characteristic of the Merlot grape that makes it a perfect complement to blend with grapes containing more tannins, like Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, thereby creating wines that are easier to drink.

Common flavours associated with Merlot wines include cherries, blackberries, plums, raisins and chocolate. It may also be peppery, spicy and have tobacco or licorice tastes and aromas. Generally, Merlot wines can age and will tend to soften with age. Merlot grapes are also well matched with oak so you will find some Merlot wines that are aged in oak barrels.
